La Sagrada Familia by Antoni Gaudi:
This church has been under construction for 125 years now, and if it is ever completed, it will be the tallest church in the world. The estimated time of completion is 2026, which is 100 years after the main architect and designer, Antoni Gaudi, was killed.
Gaudi is probably the most famous of Spanish architects and worked from the end of the 19th century until he was hit by a train in 1926. He designs were so outlandish, interesting, and flamboyant that his named inspired the term “gaudy” from his last name. If something is thought to marked by extravagance or sometimes tasteless showiness they say it is “gaudy.”
He also designed the two most famous houses in Barcelona: Casa Mila & Casa Batllo. George Lucas saw the chimneys on Casa Mila and used them as inspiration for Darth Vaders and the storm troopers helmets in the movie Star Wars. (see facebook for pictures)
